Alwar State

1770 CE – 1948 CE · capital Alwar

A Kachhwaha Rajput state of north-eastern Rajasthan, founded by the Naruka chief Pratap Singh in breakaway from Jaipur.

Origins

Pratap Singh, a Naruka Kachhwaha noble of Jaipur, built up his own holding around Rajgarh and took the fort of Alwar in 1775, founding an independent state around 1770–75. He exploited the decline of the Jats of Bharatpur and of Mughal power.

Rule and society

Bakhtawar Singh allied with the British against the Marathas in 1803 and received protection. Alwar had a 15-gun salute and a Rajput ruling class over a mixed Hindu and Meo Muslim peasantry. Maharaja Jai Singh (1892–1937), a gifted but erratic ruler, was removed by the British in 1933 after a Meo uprising and misgovernment.

Decline and legacy

Tej Singh acceded to India, and in March 1948 Alwar became the capital of the Matsya Union, which joined the United State of Rajasthan in 1949.
