Jats

Also known as Jat

The Jats are an agricultural community of north-western India and Pakistan, living mainly in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh. In the 17th and 18th centuries Jat peasants rose against Mughal rule, and leaders such as Churaman and Suraj Mal built the kingdom of Bharatpur. Many Jats in Punjab became Sikhs and formed the backbone of the Sikh armies.
