Bajana State

1700 CE – 1948 CE (approx.) · capital Bajana

A small Muslim-ruled state on the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch, held by a family of Jat Maliks.

Origins

Bajana lay on the southern edge of the Little Rann of Kutch in the Jhalawad region of Kathiawar. Its rulers were Muslim Jats, who held the estate from around 1700. Its founding is known mainly from local tradition.

Rule and society

The ruler governed a dry territory of grazing land and salt flats bordering the Rann. After 1807 Bajana came under British supervision in the Kathiawar Agency as a minor non-salute state. Few further details are recorded.

Decline and legacy

Bajana merged into the United State of Saurashtra in 1948 and became part of Gujarat in 1960. Its territory borders the Wild Ass Sanctuary of the Little Rann.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
