Midwestern United States
The Midwestern United States is a region of the north-central United States, including states such as Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri. Before European settlement it was home to the Mississippian culture, centred on Cahokia, and later to peoples such as the Illinois Confederation and the Ho-Chunk. In the 19th and 20th centuries it became the country's agricultural and industrial heartland.
