Mirambo

c. 1840–1884 · 19th century

Mirambo was a Nyamwezi ruler in present-day western Tanzania who built a powerful state, known as Urambo, in the 1870s. The son of a minor chief, he formed an army of ruga-ruga warriors armed with guns and conquered neighbouring chiefdoms west of Tabora. From 1871 to 1875 he fought the Arab and Swahili traders of Unyanyembe for control of the caravan routes to Lake Tanganyika, and European visitors compared him to Napoleon.
