Moktar Ould Daddah

1924–2003 · 20th century

Moktar Ould Daddah was the first president of Mauritania, from independence on 28 November 1960 until 1978. A lawyer trained in France, he became head of government in 1957, oversaw the building of Nouakchott as the new capital and later made his People's Party the sole legal party. The costly war in Western Sahara against the Polisario Front led to his overthrow by a military coup in July 1978.
