Momotombo
Momotombo is a conical stratovolcano rising to about 1,300 metres on the northern shore of Lake Managua in western Nicaragua. Earthquakes and eruptions in the early seventeenth century led to the abandonment of the first colonial city of León, at its foot, in 1610. In 1902 opponents of a Nicaraguan canal sent United States senators Nicaraguan stamps showing Momotombo smoking, helping to persuade them to choose the Panama route.
