Montfort Castle

from 1220 · 13th century · Also known as Starkenberg

Montfort Castle is a ruined crusader fortress in the hills of western Upper Galilee, in present-day Israel. The Teutonic Knights acquired the site in 1220 and built it as their headquarters, which they called Starkenberg. The Mamluk sultan Baybars took it after a siege in 1271, and the knights withdrew to Acre with their archives and treasury.
