Morean War

1684–1699 · 17th century · Also known as Sixth Ottoman–Venetian War · Part of the Great Turkish War

The Morean War was the war of 1684–1699 between the Republic of Venice and the Ottoman Empire, part of the Great Turkish War. Venetian forces under Francesco Morosini conquered the Peloponnese (the Morea) between 1685 and 1687 and briefly took Athens, where a shell exploded the Parthenon in 1687. The Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 confirmed Venice's hold on the Morea, which the Ottomans retook in 1715.
