Moreton Bay

Moreton Bay is a large bay on the coast of south-east Queensland, Australia, sheltered by Moreton and North Stradbroke islands, into which the Brisbane River flows. A penal settlement for reoffending convicts was founded on its shores at Redcliffe in 1824 and moved to the site of Brisbane in 1825. The surrounding Moreton Bay district was opened to free settlers in 1842 and became the colony of Queensland in 1859.
