Morgan Shuster

1877–1960 · 20th century · Also known as William Morgan Shuster

William Morgan Shuster was an American lawyer and financial administrator appointed treasurer-general of Iran by the Majlis in 1911 to reorganise the country's finances. His energetic reforms, including a treasury gendarmerie, alarmed Russia and Britain, and a Russian ultimatum in November 1911 forced his dismissal and the closure of the Majlis. He described the episode in The Strangling of Persia (1912).
