Moulay Ali al-Sharif

1589–1659 · 17th century · Also known as Moulay Ali Cherif

Moulay Ali al-Sharif was a sharif of Tafilalt in south-eastern Morocco who was proclaimed leader there around 1631, as the Saadi Sultanate disintegrated. He is regarded as the founder of the Alaouite dynasty, although its real power was built by his sons Muhammad and al-Rashid, who extended Alaouite rule over most of Morocco by the late 1660s.
