Mount Ithome

Mount Ithome is a mountain of about 800 metres in Messenia, in the south-western Peloponnese of Greece. The Messenians used it as a fortress in their wars against Sparta, and after the great earthquake of about 464 BCE rebellious helots held out on it for years. In 369 BCE the Theban general Epaminondas founded the city of Messene on its slopes, and its summit carried a sanctuary of Zeus Ithomatas.
