Mount Penanggungan

Mount Penanggungan is a dormant volcano in East Java, Indonesia, rising to about 1,650 metres. Its shape, a central peak ringed by smaller summits, recalled the sacred Mount Meru, and from the 10th to the 16th century it became a holy mountain covered with more than a hundred terraced sanctuaries, hermitages and bathing places, including Candi Belahan, linked with King Airlangga.
