Muhammad bin Thani

c. 1788–1878 · 19th century

Muhammad bin Thani was the leader of Doha and the first ruler of Qatar recognised by Britain. After a destructive war with Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, he signed an agreement with the British envoy Lewis Pelly in 1868 that treated him as the peninsula's leader and separated Qatar from Bahraini claims. His son Jassim, who succeeded him, is regarded as the founder of the Qatari state.
