d. 901 · 9th century · Also known as Muhammad Afshin

Muhammad ibn Abi'l-Saj, also called Afshin, was the founder of the Sajid dynasty. From a military family of Ushrusana in Central Asia serving the Abbasid caliphs, he was appointed governor of Azerbaijan in 889 and ruled it almost independently, from Maragha and later Ardabil, until his death in 901. He also campaigned against the Bagratid kingdom of Armenia and made his family a hereditary power in the region.
