Muhammad Shah of Brunei

d. 1402 · 14th century · Also known as Awang Alak Betatar

Muhammad Shah was, by Brunei tradition, the first Muslim sultan of Brunei. Born Awang Alak Betatar, he is said to have accepted Islam and taken the name Muhammad Shah in the 14th century, a conversion often dated to 1368. He founded the dynasty that still reigns in Brunei, with its early capital at Kota Batu on the Brunei River.
