Mwezi IV Gisabo

c. 1840–1908 · 19th century

Mwezi IV Gisabo was mwami (king) of Burundi from about 1852 to 1908, the last to rule before effective colonial control. He fought off Swahili-Arab slave traders and rival princes, and for years resisted German forces from German East Africa. In 1903 he accepted German overlordship by the Treaty of Kiganda, keeping his throne under colonial rule until his death.
