15th century · 15th century

Na Nyagse was a ruler of Dagbon, in present-day northern Ghana, remembered in tradition as the king who created the kingdom in its lasting form, probably in the 15th century. Leading Dagomba horsemen, he conquered the peoples of the White Volta basin, killed or displaced many of their earth-priests and installed his kin as chiefs, founding Dagbon's system of chieftaincies.
