Nara Narayan

r. 1540–1587 · 16th century

Nara Narayan was a king of the Koch dynasty whose reign, from 1540 to 1587, was the high point of the Koch kingdom in northern Bengal and western Assam. With his brother and general Chilarai he campaigned against the Ahom, Kachari, Jaintia and other neighbours. He patronised Sanskrit learning and the Vaishnava teacher Sankardev and rebuilt the Kamakhya temple. Late in his reign the kingdom was divided, creating Koch Hajo in the east and leaving Koch Bihar.
