Narragansett people
The Narragansett are an Algonquian-speaking Native American people of what is now Rhode Island, around Narragansett Bay. In the 17th century they were one of the most powerful nations of southern New England, sold land to Roger Williams for Providence in 1636 and fought beside the English against the Pequot in 1637. Their power was broken in King Philip's War, when colonial forces attacked them in the Great Swamp Fight of 1675.
