Natchitoches, Louisiana

1714 · 18th century

Natchitoches is a town in north-western Louisiana, founded in 1714 by the French officer Louis Juchereau de St. Denis as a trading post among the Natchitoches Caddo. It is the oldest permanent European settlement in the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. Its trade with the Hasinai alarmed Spain, which reoccupied East Texas in 1716 in response.
