National Fascist Party

1921–1943 · 20th century · Also known as Partito Nazionale Fascista, PNF

The National Fascist Party was the far-right party founded by Benito Mussolini in Rome in November 1921 as the political expression of Italian fascism, reorganising the earlier Italian Fasces of Combat. It ruled the Kingdom of Italy from the March on Rome in 1922, and from 1925 it was effectively the only legal party, a status formalised by a law of 1928. Its Blackshirt squads violently suppressed socialist organisations, and the Socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti was kidnapped and killed by fascist blackshirts. After the Grand Council of Fascism deposed Mussolini on 25 July 1943 the party was banned, and the Constitution of Italy forbids its re-formation.
