1989–1997 · 20th century · Also known as NPFL

The National Patriotic Front of Liberia was a rebel movement led by Charles Taylor that invaded Liberia from Côte d'Ivoire in December 1989, starting the First Liberian Civil War. It soon controlled most of the countryside, and after the 1996 peace agreement Taylor turned it into a political party and won the presidential election of 1997.
