National Workshops

1848 · 19th century · Also known as Ateliers nationaux

The National Workshops were a public works scheme set up by the Provisional Government of the French Second Republic in February 1848 to give work to the unemployed of Paris. Over 100,000 men enrolled, alarming conservatives. Their closure by the elected assembly in June 1848 provoked the June Days uprising, which was crushed by General Cavaignac with thousands killed.
