Nationalism
Nationalism is the political idea that a nation, defined by shared language, culture or history, should possess its own state or self-government. From the nineteenth century it undermined multinational empires. It drove demands from the many nationalities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, fuelled independence movements against the Ottoman and French empires, and shaped Chinese responses to the decline of the Qing Empire.
