Nestor Makhno

1888–1934 · 20th century

Nestor Makhno was a Ukrainian anarchist from Huliaipole who during the Russian Civil War led the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine. His forces fought the Austro-German occupiers, the Ukrainian nationalists and the Whites, sometimes in alliance with the Red Army, and defended a stateless zone run by peasant councils. The Bolsheviks crushed his movement in 1921, and he died in exile in Paris.
