Ngo Quyen

897–944 · 10th century

Ngo Quyen was a Vietnamese general who defeated a fleet of the Southern Han at the Battle of Bach Dang in 938, luring its ships onto iron-tipped stakes planted in the river bed. The victory ended about a thousand years of Chinese rule over northern Vietnam. He proclaimed himself king in 939 and founded the short-lived Ngo dynasty at Co Loa.
