Nguyen Nhac

c. 1743–1793 · 18th century · Also known as Thai Duc

Nguyen Nhac was the eldest of the three Tay Son brothers who led the revolt of 1771 against the Nguyen lords from Tay Son village in Binh Dinh. He proclaimed himself emperor in 1778 and ruled central Vietnam from Qui Nhon, while his brother Nguyen Hue took the north. Quarrels between the brothers weakened the dynasty.
