Nine Songs

Also known as Jiu Ge

The Nine Songs (Jiu Ge) are a group of eleven poems in the Chu Ci anthology, traditionally attributed to Qu Yuan but probably based on religious songs of the State of Chu. They address deities such as the Lord of the East, the Lord of the River and the goddesses of the Xiang River, and were sung by shamans in ceremonies of courtship and invocation, giving rare insight into the religion of ancient southern China.
