Nitria
Nitria was an early Christian monastic settlement in the desert west of the Nile Delta in Egypt, founded by Amun around 330. By the end of the fourth century thousands of monks lived there in cells grouped around churches, with the more remote colonies of Kellia and Scetis nearby. Visitors such as Palladius and Rufinus spread knowledge of its desert fathers to the wider church.
