Notitia Dignitatum

c. 400 · 5th century

The Notitia Dignitatum is a late Roman document listing the civil and military offices of the eastern and western empires, compiled around 400 and updated in the west into the 420s. It records the units and commanders of each region, including the Count of the Saxon Shore and his forts in Britain, and survives in illustrated Renaissance copies. It is a major source for the late Roman army and administration.
