Onondaga Lake
Onondaga Lake is a lake in central New York, beside modern Syracuse, sacred to the Onondaga Nation. Haudenosaunee tradition places the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy by the Peacemaker and Hiawatha on its shores. French Jesuits built the mission of Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha there in 1656, and salt springs around it later supported Syracuse's salt industry.
