Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha

1656–1658 · 17th century

Sainte-Marie de Gannentaha was a French Jesuit mission and settlement built in 1656 on the shore of Onondaga Lake, near present-day Syracuse, New York, at the invitation of the Onondaga. About fifty French colonists and Jesuits lived there, but fearing an attack they secretly abandoned it in March 1658. A reconstruction, Sainte Marie among the Iroquois, now stands near the site.
