Order of Aviz

12th century– · 12th century · Also known as Order of Avis

The Order of Aviz was a Portuguese military religious order founded in the twelfth century to fight the Moors, taking its name from its seat at Aviz in the Alentejo, granted in 1211. Following the Cistercian rule, it took part in the Reconquista of southern Portugal. John, Master of Aviz, became king as John I in 1385, giving his name to the House of Aviz. It survives as an honorary order of merit.
