Order of Battle against the Alans

c. 135 · 2nd century · Also known as Ektaxis kata Alanon, Acies contra Alanos

The Order of Battle against the Alans is a short Greek military treatise by Arrian, governor of Cappadocia, written around 135 CE when an Alan invasion threatened the province. It describes how he would march and deploy his legions and auxiliaries, with infantry in a deep formation to receive the charge of the Alans' heavy cavalry. It is a rare first-hand account of a Roman field army's dispositions.
