Order of Calatrava

1158 · 12th century

The Order of Calatrava was a Castilian military order founded in 1158 to defend the fortress of Calatrava on the Guadiana against the Almohads after the Templars gave it up. Affiliated with the Cistercians, its knight-monks held large estates in La Mancha and fought in the Reconquista, notably at Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212. The Catholic Monarchs brought it under the crown in 1489.
