Ordinance 50

1828 · 19th century

Ordinance 50 was a law of the Cape Colony issued in 1828 that freed the Khoikhoi and other free people of colour from the pass laws and forced labour contracts imposed on them, and gave them equal legal standing with white colonists. It was promoted by the missionary John Philip and was confirmed by the British government in 1829 so that the colony could not repeal it.
