Ordinatio imperii

817 · 9th century

The Ordinatio imperii was a decree issued by the Frankish emperor Louis the Pious at Aachen in 817 to settle his succession. It made his eldest son Lothar co-emperor and heir to the undivided empire, while his younger sons Pippin and Louis received Aquitaine and Bavaria as subordinate kingdoms. Louis's later attempts to provide for his son Charles the Bald undermined it and provoked civil war.
