Orkhon River

The Orkhon River flows through central Mongolia into the Selenga, and its valley was the political heart of successive steppe empires. The Second Turkic Khaganate raised its memorial stelae, the Orkhon inscriptions, there in the 8th century, and the Uyghurs built their capital Ordu-Baliq on its banks. The Mongols later founded Karakorum in the same valley, now a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.
