Óscar Romero

1917–1980 · 20th century · Also known as Saint Óscar Romero

Óscar Romero was Archbishop of San Salvador from 1977 to 1980. Initially considered a conservative, he became an outspoken critic of military repression and death squads, using his radio sermons to denounce killings. He was shot dead while celebrating mass on 24 March 1980, a murder that the UN Truth Commission attributed to Roberto D'Aubuisson. He was canonised in 2018.
