Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin

Also known as Ostrava-Karviná coalfield

The Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin is the Czech part of the Upper Silesian coalfield, in the Moravian-Silesian Region around Ostrava and Karviná. Coal mining began in the late eighteenth century, and with the Vítkovice ironworks, founded in 1828, it made the area the industrial heart of Austria's Czech lands. Mining in Ostrava itself ended in 1994, though it continued around Karviná.
