Otago
Otago is a region in the south-east of New Zealand's South Island, with Dunedin as its main city. It was settled from 1848 by a Free Church of Scotland colony, and the discovery of gold at Gabriel's Gully in 1861 set off the Otago gold rush, which for a time made Dunedin the largest town in New Zealand. Its economy later rested on sheep farming, and it is home to the University of Otago, founded in 1869.
