Otakars

1056–1192 · 11th century · Also known as Traungauer

The Otakars were a noble dynasty, counts of Steyr in Upper Austria, who ruled the Carantanian March from 1056. They made it independent of Carinthia, and the land took its name, Styria, from their castle of Steyr. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa raised Ottokar IV to duke in 1180, and the line ended with his death in 1192.
