Othello

c. 1603 · 17th century

Othello is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, written around 1603 and first published in 1622. It tells of a Moorish general in the service of Venice who is driven by his scheming ensign Iago to murder his wife, Desdemona. Scholars have linked the play's Moorish hero to English interest in Morocco, including the visit of the Moroccan embassy of Abd al-Wahid ben Messaoud to London in 1600.
