Pachomius the Great

c. 292–348 · 4th century · Also known as Saint Pachomius

Pachomius was an Egyptian Christian monk who founded the first communal monasteries, beginning at Tabennisi in Upper Egypt in the 320s. Unlike the hermits, his monks lived together under a written rule, sharing work, prayer and meals. By his death in 348 his federation included several monasteries of men and women, and his rule influenced later monastic rules in East and West.
