Palermo Cathedral

1185 · 12th century

Palermo Cathedral is the cathedral of the Sicilian capital, rebuilt from 1185 by Archbishop Walter Ophamil on the site of an earlier church that had served as a mosque under Muslim rule. Roger II was crowned in the earlier building on Christmas Day 1130, and the present cathedral holds the royal tombs of Roger II, Henry VI, Constance and Frederick II. It is part of a World Heritage Site.
