    Isaac II Angelos kills Stephen Hagiochristophorites and raises a revolt

    When Stephen Hagiochristophorites, lieutenant of Emperor Andronikos I Komnenos, tried to arrest him, Isaac II Angelos killed him and took refuge in the Hagia Sophia. His appeal to the people raised a revolt that deposed Andronikos and made Isaac emperor.

    Isaac II Angelos is crowned Byzantine emperor

    After a revolt deposed Andronikos I Komnenos, Isaac II Angelos was crowned emperor, the crowd having rejected the coronation of his uncle John Doukas. Isaac established the Angelos family as the new imperial dynasty.

    The Uprising of Asen and Peter against Byzantine rule begins

    On the feast day of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the brothers Theodore-Peter and Ivan Asen led the Bulgarians and Vlachs of the Balkan Mountains in a revolt against Byzantine rule, sparked by taxation. By 1187 they had established the Second Bulgarian Empire.
