Raymond-Roger Trencavel

1185–1209 · 13th century

Raymond-Roger Trencavel was viscount of Carcassonne, Béziers and Albi. When the Albigensian Crusade began in 1209, crusaders sacked Béziers and besieged him in Carcassonne. He surrendered after negotiating, was imprisoned and died in captivity months later. His lands were given to Simon de Montfort, and a revolt by his son in 1240 failed.
