House of Trencavel

Also known as Trencavel

The Trencavel were a family of viscounts in Languedoc who in the eleventh and twelfth centuries held Albi, Béziers, Carcassonne, Nîmes and Agde, shifting allegiance between the counts of Toulouse and Barcelona. Accused of protecting Cathars, Viscount Raymond-Roger Trencavel lost Béziers and Carcassonne to the Albigensian Crusade in 1209 and died in prison. His son's attempts to recover the lands had failed by 1247.
